Uber, Coachella, SurgeUber, the on demand black car app, is widely known for it’s good service and it’s price gouging, or surge, as they call it. They’re also known for throwing some great parties. At this past weekends Coachella music festival they got the chance to blend both.

There’s a wide variety of Uber photos from Coachella on both Twitter and Instagram. People shown off partying down to great music, good times and Uber swag. But the big story comes as the night started to end after midnight.

Uber typically charges a surge charge when supply falls way short of demand. Uber’s CEO Travis Kalanick has defended the surge pricing over and over again as a way to entice either more drivers to come out or more drivers to stay out when there is huge demand. In theory as the supply increases and the demand goes down the pricing will level out.

With Uber’s surge pricing sometimes 4 to 6x what a normal Uber ride would cost, an Uber driver would be a fool not to take advantage.

In Uber’s defense though, they do roughly estimate how much the ride will cost when the Uber user initially logs into the app to see if there is even an Uber car around. In fact the app gives at least two more warnings before the black car is dispatched to their location.

There are quite a few screen shot tweets from this weekend showing the massive increase in Uber rates.

Take Twitter user Chaci, a culture blogger and music promoter in Los Angeles. Chachi posted an Uber receipt from 2:00am on Sunday morning when Chachi needed a ride just 24 miles, the total cost $554.92, yes Twitter followers did acknowledge the fact that, that is the cost of a round trip plane ticket to most areas.
